- The Prakasam District, with headquarters in Ongole, is named after the late Chief Minister of Andhra State, Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu.
- Prakasam District is considered one of the backward districts of Andhra Pradesh in terms of economy and higher education.
- The Acharya Nagarjuna University Post-Graduation Centre in Ongole was established in 1993 and later upgraded to Andhra Kesari University.
- Andhra Kesari University was established by the Andhra Pradesh Government on 11-01-2022, as per Notification No. 36, under Act No. 21 of 2021.
- Andhra Kesari University is recognized as a State University and is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956.
- Andhra Kesari University offers 9 postgraduate courses: M.A. History, M.A. Economics, Master of Social Work (M.S.W.), Master of Education (M.Ed.), M.Com., M.B.A., M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Statistics, and Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed.).
- Andhra Kesari University also offers one undergraduate program: Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.).
- Seven new courses will be introduced from the academic year 2023-24: M.Sc. Aquaculture, M.Sc. Organic Chemistry, M.Sc. Analytical Chemistry, M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Environmental Science & Technology, M.A. English, and M.A. Telugu.
- Each department at the university has eligible guides for pursuing research activities leading to Ph.D. programs.
- Anji Reddy Mareddy, a Professor of Environmental Sciences & Technology at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, with 34 years of experience, was appointed as the founder Vice-Chancellor on 09-02-2023. B. Hari Babu from the Department of Chemistry at Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, with 20 years of experience, was appointed as the founder Registrar on 16-03-2023.
